How to pay employee super contributions

Learn how you can help simplify and enhance the management of your employer super contributions.

Simplify your super contributions

Did you know that when you make employee super contributions you need to do so via an online clearing house that’s compliant with SuperStream?

An online clearing house is a digital platform that processes and manages financial transactions between different parties, and SuperStream is a government system that standardises the way super contributions are paid.

To help you to meet your super obligations, for all your employees and in one simple transaction, Mercer Super provides our employer partners with access to two SuperStream compliant clearing house platforms – Mercer Employer Portal (powered by SuperChoice) and Mercer QuickSuper.

Both platforms help ensure timely transfers to align with payroll cycles, reduce administrative tasks, and maintain compliance with the latest super legislation.

If you’re thinking of using Mercer Employer Portal, or Mercer QuickSuper, or perhaps need a refresher on either of the platforms, the following can help give you peace of mind that your super contributions can be managed more efficiently, and reliably.

Benefits of using Mercer Employer Portal or Mercer QuickSuper

As an employer, you have the flexibility to choose either Mercer Employer Portal or Mercer QuickSuper as your preferred online clearing house to help you simplify the often complex process of making super contributions.

Both solutions offer a myriad of benefits –

  • Compliant – As super laws and regulations evolve, staying compliant with your obligations can be challenging. Both Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper not only integrate with SuperStream, but can help you meet all current regulatory requirements.

  • Efficient – Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper can both consolidate all your employees’ contributions into a single payment, which is then distributed to their individual super funds. This could potentially reduce your administrative overhead and minimise errors.

  • Time-effective – Using Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper can help reduce the time that can come with making employee super contributions one at a time. Accurate and timely contributions are crucial to help avoid penalties and ensure employee benefits are maximised.

  • Secure – Both Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper adopt robust security measures to help protect the data of your business and your employees.

  • Improved cash flow management – With Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper, you could better manage your cash flow by synchronising contributions with your payroll processes, in turn helping you maintain a balanced cash flow and avoid strain of lump-sum quarterly payments.
  • Enhanced employee trust – Timely super contributions can enhance the satisfaction, trust, and financial wellbeing of your people as they gain confidence knowing their super is being regularly contributed.

How Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper can help with your compliance

  • Interfaces directly with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to ensure contributions are accurate and on time.

  • Provides detailed reporting and audit trails – helping you track and demonstrate your compliance.

  • Has regular system updates to reflect changes in super laws or regulations in a timely manner.

  • Offers support and guidance on super compliance matters so you can better understand and meet your obligations.

How to future-proof your super contributions for Payday super

Given online clearing houses including Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper are designed so you can easily upload your contribution files (either extracted from your payroll system, or manually keyed in), the timeliness and accuracy of your super contributions could be aligned with up-coming Payday Super requirements.

Payday Super aims to change the frequency with which you make SG contributions to your employees. Traditionally, you need to make your SG contributions at least quarterly.

Payday Super, which is anticipated to come into effect on 1 July 2026, means you’ll need to make SG contributions at the same time you pay your employees their wages.

You may consider shifting to using an online clearing house like Mercer Employer Portal or Mercer QuickSuper to make SG contributions at the same time you pay your employees their wages, if you don’t do so already. This can help future-proof your employer super contributions and ensure your systems are already set up on 1 July 2026.

So, which clearing house should I use to make employee contributions?

Choosing between Mercer Employer Portal and Mercer QuickSuper can depend on your specific business needs and preferences.

Mercer QuickSuper for example integrates with Westpac, so if you prefer having the security and reliability of a major financial institution, Mercer QuickSuper could be advantageous.

Whereas, if you prefer a provider who offers flexibility in integration with a wide range of payroll systems, Mercer Employer Portal may be your preference.

When choosing a system for your business, you could think about:

  • Ease of integration with your payroll processes.
  • Security of transmission and financial data storage.
  • Scalability of the platform to meet or grow with your business.
  • Focus on continuous innovation in technology.
  • Customer support levels.

Ultimately, it’s worth considering the operational preferences of your business, integration capabilities, and the level of support and security you might need.

Conducting a demo or trial of each platform (if and where available) could also help you assess which one best meets your specific needs before making a decision.
